Deaths of elderly couple in Abbotsford ruled murder-suicide: IHIT

Days after an elderly couple was found dead inside their Abbotsford home, homicide investigators have deemed the case a murder-suicide.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) says an 80-year-old man and an 80-year-old woman, who were in a long-term relationship, died in a shooting at their residence on McKee Road in the Upper Ten Oaks neighbourhood.

The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. on Monday, June 30, after Abbotsford police were called to reports of a violent dispute.

When officers arrived at the home, they discovered both individuals deceased.

“This is a tragic incident and a shock to the community,” said Sgt. Freda Fong with IHIT.

“Our thoughts go out to emergency personnel that had to respond, the families of the deceased, and members of the immediate community who may be left feeling impacted.”

At this point, it’s believed one of the seniors shot the other before taking their own life.

Fong says investigators are still working to understand the couple’s relationship history and what may have led to the violence.

“Investigators are working diligently to find those answers, and we’ll be talking to a number of people in the neighbourhood, as well as family members and friends.”

On Wednesday, IHIT was unable to confirm whether police had previously been called to the home for reports of disputes or disturbances.

“What I can say is that this incident was a tragic event involving intimate partner violence. There are no outstanding suspects and no ongoing risk to the public,” Fong told 1130 NewsRadio.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

The couple’s names have not been released, out of respect for their families.
