Search called off for 20-year-old missing after hike near Squamish

Mounties in Squamish say the search for a 20-year-old hiker who went missing near Shannon Falls Tuesday has been suspended.

The Squamish RCMP said Alexander Nguyen went missing while sightseeing with his parents during the afternoon. He was reported missing later that day.

Throughout the week, Mounties and Squamish Search and Rescue (SSR) members were combing the area.

But in an update Friday, the RCMP says SSR has ended its search for now.

“50-plus people ground crew were out looking for the individual, along with several helicopters and drones,” said a police release.

“The full area was thoroughly searched, and the individual was not located; therefore at this time the search has been called off.”

In a post to social media, SSR said, “This decision is never easy.”

“Any remaining terrain in the search area is too high risk to be searched safely.”

SSR says his last cell phone ping came from the Sea to Summit trail “just past where the trail connects with upper Shannon Falls” around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Nguyen, who SSR has identified as Alex Mai, is described as a 5’8″, 121-pound Asian man with long black hair in a bun and brown eyes.

He was last seen wearing grey shorts, flip-flops, a tank top, and a crossbody bag.

Both police and SSR have released photos of the 20-year-old to help the public identify him.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call the Squamish RCMP at 604-892-6100.
