British Columbia’s police watchdog has concluded an investigation after a woman was injured while being arrested in Duncan on Vancouver Island last year.
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) says the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP responded to reports of the woman waving a weapon at cars near the intersection of Underwood and Craig streets on Nov. 29, 2024.
She was found shortly after in the area of the Cowichan River and Allenby Road.
“There was then an interaction between the woman and police while she was being taken into custody,” the office said. “The woman sustained a serious injury and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.”
The organization’s chief civilian director says they have reviewed all witness statements, medical information, and police records and found there were no reasonable grounds to show an officer committed an offence.
The IIO is a civilian agency that investigates all police-involved incidents resulting in death or serious harm, whether or not there are any allegations of wrongdoing.
A police investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
