Vancouver Island woman and baby killed by falling tree

Vancouver Island Mounties have shared the tragic story of a mother and child killed by a falling tree Thursday.

The Comox Valley RCMP says it was called to Comox Lake around 1:45 p.m. along with the Cumberland Fire Department.

There, a tree had falleen on a 26-year-old woman and her five-month-old baby.

“Despite the efforts of first responders, the young mother passed away at the scene. The infant was transported to hospital but sadly did not survive,” police explained.

Mounties says they will work with the BC Coroners Service to determine the cause of the deaths, but currently no criminality is suspected.

The RCMP thanked the bystanders who “stepped in to help under heartbreaking circumstances.”
