Delta city councillor urges to declare public health emergency

Delta’s emergency room (ER) was forced to close for the fourth time this year, and now city councillor Dylan Kruger is calling on his council colleagues to declare a public health emergency.
The ER was shut down for more than 12 hours over the weekend.

“We have no urgent care centre in our community. We have virtually no walk-in clinics. We have a shortage of family doctors. It is a public health crisis,” he told 1130 NewsRadio.
Kruger says the health of the community is being put at risk because of the ER closures.
He explains that the limited availability of family doctors and the lack of an urgent care centre in Delta make the situation even worse.
He says Delta’s council needs to make a statement in order to get the provincial government’s attention.
“We have to do this now. We have to make a bold statement to get the attention of decision makers in Victoria at the Ministry of Health,” he stressed.
“Platitudes are not good enough. Talking points are not good enough. We need to know what is the plan today to make sure we don’t see a closure of our ER room ever again.”
He says the community wants to see action, not more talk.
Kruger wants the provincial government and Fraser Health to commit immediate resources so these closures at the local emergency room will stop happening.
“People expect in a G7 nation like Canada, if you pay your property taxes, if you pay your income taxes, you’re going to have access to things like emergency healthcare when you need it.”
“We’re failing at that basic standard. We’re failing at the standard of care that is expected in a country like ours. We have to do better.”
He is tabling a motion that will be presented to the Delta council on Monday evening.
