Woman charged after 3 infants assaulted in Surrey hospital; B.C.’s health minister reacts

A 35-year-old woman is facing charges in connection with the assault of three babies at Surrey Memorial Hospital earlier this year.

A court-ordered publication ban has limited details of the case, but the Surrey Police Service says the alleged assaults took place in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Police say the suspect entered the unit around 7 a.m. on Oct. 28.

“The suspect then allegedly removed her shirt and made skin-to-skin contact with three infants,” the SPS said.

“None of the infants were injured as a result of the interaction.”

Security officers then removed a woman from the building, and the SPS says it wasn’t notified of the incident until several hours later, around 1 p.m.

Sgt. Lindsey Houghton tells 1130 NewsRadio that the SPS began investigating immediately, but was unsuccessful until police appealed to the public to help identify the suspect on Friday, Nov. 28.

The suspect was arrested Saturday.

In an update Monday, police say she is facing three counts of assault and remains in custody until her first court appearance.

Speaking at an unrelated media event Monday, B.C. Health Minister Josie Osborne described the incident as “alarming.”

She claims the Fraser Health Authority is working to update its safety protocols.

“It’s very important that anything that can be learned from an incident like that is used to adapt policies, and it’s something I know Fraser Health takes incredibly seriously,” said Osborne.
