Police in Vancouver say they’re working with the city’s school board to prevent a repeat of an incident at a high school basketball game Monday when an 18-year-old was stabbed.
Officers say the assault happened after a game between Eric Hamber and Killarney Secondary School. No arrests have been made.
Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Sgt. Steve Addison says the collaboration with the Vancouver School Board (VSB) comes as more games are on the horizon, sparking a need for everyone to feel safe.
“We are in discussions with the VSB right now about the need for us to provide additional police presence, likely through school liaison officers as those games take place,” Addison said.
The exact motive of the attack is unknown, but he said, “I have come to the understanding that during the game, there was some tension that arose between the two schools” during a “high-stakes game with playoff implications.”
Police say the assault took place shortly after 9 p.m. as the game was concluding. Addison said the boy sustained serious injuries to his arm.
“My understanding is he underwent surgery or significant medical treatment at hospital,” he said.
Police say they are aware of at least one other victim.
“That is a person who we understand, we believe, was struck during one of the fights with what we believe to be an object, possibly a bike lock,” Addison said.
“We are continuing to investigate that. There certainly may be other victims.”
With the investigation ongoing, VPD is asking for witnesses or anyone with cell phone footage to contact them.
