The Coquihalla Highway is closed southbound after a vehicle incident, DriveBC said around 5 p.m. Thursday.

Southbound traffic is closed between Merritt and Hope as the situation is assessed, it said.

This is the second issue on this stretch of highway in the past 24 hours.

Around 10 p.m. Wednesday, DriveBC reported a closure in both directions, starting at Othello Road, just north of Hope.

Details were limited, but callers to 1130 NewsRadio reported that multiple semi trucks were involved in the crash.

Around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, DriveBC announced the highway had reopened to northbound traffic. Southbound was reopened shortly afterwards, briefly, until the second crash Thursday afternoon.

The stretch of highway is under a travel advisory for “heavy snowfall and high winds producing limited visibility.”

To avoid the closure, southbound drivers can take Highway 5A to Highway 3 or Highway 8 to Highway 1.

DriveBC has not provided an estimated time for reopening the Coquihalla Highway. In an update around 5 p.m., it said the closure continues while an assessment is in progress.
