Gas pains: price per litre jumps past $2 across Lower Mainland

If you waited until this weekend to gas up, you might experience some pain at the pumps.
The price of regular gas has been spotted around the 202.9-cents-per-litre mark in Vancouver and as high as 204.9 cents per litre in Surrey.
Anyone seeking lower prices could head out to Mission, where prices were seen as low as 174.9 cents per litre, according to GasBuddy. As well, a handful of stations in Burnaby are sitting below 190 cents per litre .
Prices have been pushed up in part due to the U.S.-Israel attacks on Iran, which have disrupted tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz at the southern end of the Persian Gulf, through which 20 per cent of the world’s oil supply passes.
The head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.com, Patrick De Haan, said last week the “effective closure” of the passage has pushed the price of crude oil above $100 per barrel.
Analysts say other factors in the high price include oil refinery woes in California’s Bay Area and the switch back by most retailers to the summer gasoline formula.
A survey of 427 stations around Metro Vancouver Sunday found that the region’s prices are far outpacing the national average. In the last week, Metro Vancouver has seen an increase of 16.2 cents per litre, while the national average has only risen 9.4 cents per litre.
