Mounties say first responders arrived and found someone in medical distress.

“Despite life-saving efforts, the individual succumbed to their injuries at the scene,” said Sgt. Zynal Sharoom in a statement Wednesday morning.

“The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been called in.”

In an update Wednesday afternoon, IHIT says it believes the incident was targeted and limited to a single unit in a residential complex.

Investigators have identified the victim as a man in his 40s.

Sgt. Freda Fong says IHIT is still verifying information before “appealing to any specific vehicle or suspect descriptions right now.”

She says the shooting is not currently linked to extortion.

“It is still under investigation whether it’s gang-related. What I can say is that the victim had a criminal history and was known to the police, mainly for property crimes,” said Fong.

Officers will be canvassing the neighbourhood and speaking with witnesses.

Anyone with information or video to share is asked to contact investigators at the IHIT info line 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

On May 16, the Langley RCMP reported investigating a targeted shooting on the same city block.

IHIT confirmed both incidents happened in the same building complex, and investigators are exploring the possibility of a connection, but it’s “too early to say.”
