Three OMNI and CityNews journalists among Webster Award finalists

By News Staff

Monika Gul, Sarbraj Singh Kahlon, and Rhea Santos have been named finalists for the 2026 Jack Webster Awards, recognizing three of the year’s toughest and most impactful stories to come out of Rogers Sports & Media’s CityNews and OMNI newsrooms.

In the category of Excellence in Multilingual Journalism, OMNI News’s Sarbraj Kahlon was nominated for coverage of how extortion fears among Vancouver builders drove policy changes at City Hall, reporting produced alongside Allan Chek, Kristen Johnson, and Sonia Kalra.

Rhea Santos earned a nod in Excellence in Feature Reporting – TV/Video for a CityNews Connect special following the healing journey after the Lapu-Lapu Day tragedy, a project she worked on with Carol McGrath and Kristen Johnson.

And in Best News Reporting of the Year – TV/Video, CityNews’ Monika Gul was named a finalist for coverage of the Tumbler Ridge shooting and its aftermath, alongside colleagues Allan Chek, Rob Abel, and Cal Wood.

This year’s winners will be announced at a ceremony Nov. 2 at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver, marking the 40th anniversary of the Webster Awards, which honour the best in B.C. journalism each year.
