Transit police looking for several people in connection with a fight on a New West bus

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – Transit Police are looking for several people involved in a fight that saw slaps exchanged and spit lobbed on a TransLink bus, all of which was caught on film.

Adeola Oyebula posted a nine-second video of the fight to Twitter on Sunday that shows an elderly woman being held back by a younger woman while the elder spits on someone off camera. The younger woman then shoves the lady into a seat and slaps her on the head, which knocks her to the floor of the bus.

Oyebula says it all happened on the 106 bus near the New Westminster SkyTrain station and began when the elderly woman refused to let a man sit next to her.

“She said no, that she didn’t want the guy to sit beside her, so they were fighting over a seat and a black guy in a wheelchair interfered,” Oyebula says.

“She was insulting the black guy and before anyone knew what was going on she spat on the black guy’s face.”

The disabled man’s girlfriend then slapped the woman, Oyebula says, which is what we see in the video. Once the elderly woman fell to the floor, she blocked the man in the wheelchair from getting off the bus, with video of her saying they need to stay because someone is calling police.

Oyebula says she thinks the bus driver called police and had previously tried to get the woman to get off the bus before the fight broke out.

According to Oyebula everyone involved eventually got off the bus at New Westminster SkyTrain station, where the elderly woman slapped and spat on the man in the wheelchair again before taking off. She says the man and woman left behind weren’t seriously hurt.

Transit Police did not receive a report about the incident and are reaching out to all the jurisdictions to find out if it was reported somewhere. They have been made aware of the video and are trying to get the video from the bus cameras.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Transit Police at 604-515-8300.
