Diabetes charity relieved as Vancouver lifts clothing donation bin ban

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Charities are relieved that Vancouver is lifting its ban on clothing donation bins — as long as they receive a licence and pass a safety inspection.

Simon Langer with Diabetes Canada says the organization retrofitted all of its bins in January, including an engineering inspection, and they will meet the city’s licensing requirements.

“We very much look forward to continuing to work with the city, and to place our donation bins on city property to help the municipality reach their waste diversion goals — while, of course, also supporting the one-in-three individuals that are affected by diabetes or pre-diabetes in the City of Vancouver.”

He says the bins are a major source of revenue for the charity.

“These donations represent approximately 25 per cent of our total revenue, which, of course provide essential funding for our life-saving diabetes research, advocacy, and it also supports our diabetes camps.”

Vancouver and a number of other Lower Mainland municipalities had banned the bins after a string of deaths throughout the country in recent years.
