Angela Bower takes a look at the life and legacy Joe Fortes. Not just the namesake of a Vancouver chain restaurant – Fortes was one of the city’s most prominent Black citizens. He came to Canada in the late 1800s, became Vancouver’s first official lifeguard, and saved dozens of lifeguards.
