Stolen Order of Canada recovered

WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Some good news for an Order of Canada recipient in West Vancouver who suffered a heartbreaking break and enter this week.

Nineteen medals belonging to Vancouver Aquarium co-founder Dr. Murray Newman have been found.

A Canada Post mail carrier discovered them dumped in a postal box on Commercial Drive.

The carrier then turned the medals in at the local Community Policing Office.

The recovered medals included Dr. Newman’s Order of Canada, a Canada 125 medal, a Queen’s Jubilee medal, and naval medals. But the ribbons and mounting boards that the medals were attached to have not been found.

West Vancouver Police retrieved the medals and a nightshift patrol team member had the happy task of taking the medals back to Dr. Newman.

“We’re grateful that we got a strong response from media and social media. Perhaps that awareness assisted the offender in determining that he wasn’t going to have a good sale of these items,” says West Vancouver Constable Jeff Palmer.

Police are continuing to investigate the break-in.
