Vancouver Aquarium’s new octopus named after Seth Rogen

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The people have spoken: The Vancouver Aquarium’s new octopus is now called “Ceph Rogen,” named after local celebrity Seth Rogen.

The aquarium wanted to name the octopus and left it up to the public to choose.

“Normally we name it after the location but we thought this time let’s open it up and get a naming contest happening,” said Christine Martinello with the aquarium.

In a Facebook poll, “Ceph” took 90 per cent of the vote, beating other options such as “Octavia.”

Martinello says this shows how much Rogen means to this city.

“It’s absolutely amazing and it showcases how much Vancouverites really appreciate him and connect with him, which is wonderful,” she says. “It’s wonderful to have local home-grown talent listen in on what Vancouver Aquarium is doing and we really appreciate his feedback.”

As for a naming ceremony, Martinello says they’re not closed to the idea.

“We’ve invited him down to come and meet ‘Ceph Rogen’ and he’s not in town at the moment but we, we will definitely, be very honoured to meet him and show him and show him his namesake.”

More than 9,000 people voted in the online poll in just 24 hours.

Rogen himself weighed in on Twitter, urging people to vote for “Ceph.”

Once the word got out, people were quick to help Seth win.
