Child abductor, high-risk sex offender Randall Hopley back behind bars

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The man convicted of abducting a three-year-old boy from his home in eastern B.C. more than eight years ago is back in custody, according to the Correctional Service of Canada. 

Randall Peter Hopley was arrested in Vancouver in April. The Correctional Service  won’t reveal why he is being held in custody, citing the Privacy Act. They said in an email that he was being monitored through an ankle bracelet and his release is under review.

In 2018, Hopley was released from prison and placed under a long-term supervision order after serving a six-year sentence for the 2011 kidnapping that prompted an amber alert and a manhunt.

“In instances where a long term supervision order is in place, offenders are subject to supervision requirements based on their risk and needs and will be returned to custody if they are believed to present a risk to the public,” the Correctional Service wrote.

Hopley moved to Vancouver in November after serving a six year sentence, prompting a Vancouver Police Department warning that he had been assessed as “a high risk for violent and sexual re-offending” and posed a “risk of significant harm to the safety of young boys.”

Hopley’s record includes convictions for abducting of a person under the age of 14, sexual assault, assault, and break-and-enters.
