Edmonton man linked to 2 Lower Mainland shootings charged with first-degree murder

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – A man has been arrested in two deadly Lower Mainland shootings, including the one that killed a high school basketball star from Abbotsford who was not the intended target.

First degree murder charges have been laid against someone with known ties to Lower Mainland gangs.

Cpl. David Lee with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says 21-year-old Tyrel Hiue Nguyen Quesnelle, originally from Surrey, was picked up by police in Edmonton.

“We had located Quesnelle in Edmonton, but it was the Edmonton Police service with their emergency response team that conducted the arrest for us,” he says.

“After months of investigation, IHIT investigators linked both incidents and determined that they were connected to the same individual. The BC Prosecution Service has approved first degree murder charges against Mr. Quesnelle.”

He says the man now in custody is accused of killing 19-year-old criminology student Jagvir Malhi in November of last year, who was an unintended victim.

Lee says Quesnelle is also responsible for the murder of Vancouver-based Randeep Kang, 27, who had known gang ties. He was shot in Surrey in October of 2017.
