Flurries to start this week, much more snow on the way for Metro Vancouver

There’s no let up to the wintry weather B.C.’s South Coast is seeing, as more snow is expected to fall Monday with much more on the way later this week.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued another snowfall warning for much of the Lower Mainland, suggesting we could get another 15 centimetres by Tuesday.

CityNews Meteorologist Carl Lam says temperatures are going to stay frigid for much of the week, too.

“We’re only getting up to minus five at YVR [on Monday], feeling like minus 12 during the day, so bundle up — it is going to be super, super cold,” he said.

“We’ll have some snow showers across Metro Vancouver. Those will start to taper off by the early afternoon, but then we have more snow on the way tonight as this low approaches the South Coast and wants to bring more snow to the region.”

The snowfall warning covers Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, the Sunshine Coast, and Vancouver Island.

“A low-pressure system will land in Washington State tonight. The associated front will brush through the very southern part of British Columbia giving another round of snow starting late this evening,” Environment Canada said in a statement.

“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow,” the weather service said.

CityNews Meteorologist Andrea Andreachhi says some models suggest we could see up to another 20 centimetres of snow later this week, on top of what we’ll get in the next 24 hours.

But, don’t count on a white Christmas — it could be washed away by Sunday.

“Looking ahead into the holiday weekend, we’ve got snow mixed with rain at times, as temperatures will start to fluctuate above freezing towards the weekend,” she said.
