Lower Mainland set to get another blast of wintry weather
After three back-to-back storms along B.C.’s South Coast, you may have thought we were past the worst of this winter season — but far from it.
The Lower Mainland, and frankly, all of B.C., is about to get hit with an arctic blast of cold air and yes, there may be some snow in the forecast but nothing serious compared to what we saw late last month when the region was hit with three back-to-back storms in less than a week.
We’re not expecting any records either, but temperatures could hit as low as -8 Celcius, with daytime highs not being great.

“It’s been a while, basically a month, since we’ve had any arctic air in place. This polar vortex is dropping down across the Prairies [and] Western Ontario and then tracking back to the west. It looks like we’ll see four or five sub-zero days potentially, and that’s for daytime highs. It’s not long-lasting but it could be a week of arctic air across the Lower Mainland,” explains CityNews Meteorologist Michael Kuss.
He says this weather is below seasonal for us.
“Just because it’s cold, it doesn’t mean we’re going to see a lot of snow. In fact, it’s a fairly dry pattern. We could get a little blast of mixed precipitation as the cold air plunges in Saturday into Sunday, nothing major in there. And then quite dry through to the end of next week as the arctic air gets flushed away, there could be a transition in there where we see some snow at the end of the week next Thursday and Friday, it looks like,” adds Kuss.
You can look to local municipalities to open shelter space and warming centres for those who need it most.

This unusual jet stream is coming from Siberia where just over a week ago, it hit -62.4 Celsius in Tongulakh — the coldest temperature recorded in Russia in about two decades. It’s also how cold an average day on Mars is right now. So, yes it will be cold here but not Mars-cold.
