Surrey ‘floating’ bird gains online attention

Birds of a feather… don’t flock together?
Over the weekend, a Twitter user posted a video of a bird seeming suspending alone in the air near some powerlines.

The video gained a significant amount of traction across social media, with some users responding with suggestions just how it was staying suspended.

“What about a spider’s web? There are spiders that kill birds right?” one user suggested.
“Perhaps it got tangled in some fishing line?” said another.
“Interesting if it’s hanging on electricity,” another user suggested.
“Must be a thread that is not visible in the recording. Impressive nevertheless,” suggested another Twitter user.
On TikTok, another local posted about their daughter’s boyfriend seeing the bird. This time, from a different angle.

In a message to CityNews, the user behind the original Twitter post says they found the supposedly floating bird near L.A. Matheson Secondary School in Surrey.
“We were getting ready to go out and seen this outside. There was absolutely nothing we could see with the human eye that was holding it or attached to it. Very weird and eerie. We walked underneath it, checked the surrounding powerlines and houses and still couldn’t see anything around this bird. Literally looked like a dead bird just floating,” they said.
CityNews has reached out to the BCSPCA for comment, while the RCMP says it hasn’t received anything on the matter.
