B.C. teacher suspended for yelling at students

A B.C. teacher has been suspended for three days and must complete a course on restorative action after yelling at two students.

As a document from the British Columbia Commissioner for Teacher Regulation explains, the teacher confronted the students in 2022 after hearing they were engaged in “concerning behaviour.”

The first time the teacher spoke to them about an “alleged incident,” he claimed the students were lying to him, he told them “he would find out more information about what they had done.”

The second time he spoke to them, the teacher opted to use self-described “bad cop” tactics and became visibly angry with them. The teacher proceeded to swear and raise his voice, telling them — if he were still in high school he would kick their “a** right now.”

“Both students reported feeling threatened and unsafe after this exchange,” the Commissioner stated.

The Commissioner adds that the teacher did not tell administrators about either discussion with the students.

The Commissioner later determined the teacher “failed to model appropriate behaviour expected of an educator,” and “failed to report to School administrators who could have taken action to address the student conduct.”

The teacher has agreed to remain quiet on the matter — not making any contradictory statements, whether spoken or written.
