4.9-magnitude earthquake detected off Vancouver Island near Port Hardy

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake has been detected off the coast of Vancouver Island, Earthquakes Canada says.

The epicentre of the quake, which happened shortly after 8 p.m., was approximately 200 km west of Port Hardy, the authority said.

The quake was initially detected to be at a depth of 10 km.

Three earthquakes happened in the same vicinity Sept. 17, with magnitudes of 4.3, 4.5, and 5.4.

No tsunami is expected, Earthquakes Canada says.
