North Shore mountains see first snow of season

For those who like to hit the slopes during the winter, the first real snow of the season on the North Shore mountains is creating some excitement Tuesday morning.

Snow has been steadily accumulating on Cypress Mountain, Grouse Mountain, and Mt Seymour.

While the resorts won’t officially open for around a month, CityNews Meteorologist Michael Kuss explains an arctic front over the mountain passes is bringing cold air to create perfect snow-making conditions.

“Arctic air is sinking south across the province and colliding with warmer moist air from the Pacific,” he said.

“We’re getting snow on the local ski hills today with the freezing level around 1,000 metres.”

Kuss says the temperatures will continue to stay below seasonal into the weekend.

The local snow comes as major highways in B.C.’s Interior saw major snow overnight into Tuesday.

The Coquihalla Highway and Rogers Pass saw lanes covered in snow, with flurries expected to continue throughout the day Tuesday.
