2 people taken to hospital after DTES fire: VFRS

Vancouver fire crews say two people were taken to the hospital after a blaze in the Downtown Eastside Wednesday.

Capt. Matthew Trudeau tells CityNews firefighters were called to a residential building in the area of Cordova Street between Columbia and Carrall streets and “encountered heavy smoke.”

He says firefighters quickly made their way up the four-storey building and were able to contain the fire to the top floor.

“There is smoke damage, but we contained it to the area of origin,” he explained.

Crews confirm one person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, while a firefighter sustained a lower-body injury and was also transported for treatment.

Crews shut a portion of East Cordova Street as they wrapped up.
