North end of Granville Bridge closed until fall as part of replacement work

Ongoing replacement work will affect access to the Granville Street Bridge in Vancouver for the next several months.

The City of Vancouver says the north end of the bridge is closed as some of the structure is replaced as part of the first phase of the Granville Connector.

Drivers are told to use the Seymour and Howe street ramps, while pedestrians can access the crossing via sidewalks on those ramps.

The closure is in place until the fall. The city says it’s best to plan ahead and expect delays throughout the planned work.

“The existing bridge structure north of Pacific Street will be removed and replaced with a new, elevated roadway section of Granville Street,” the City of Vancouver explains on its website.

It notes speed has also been reduced to 30 kilometres per hour to accommodate the construction, with drivers and pedestrians told to watch for signage and detours.

“We’re building the first phase of the Granville Connector with the installation of new pedestrian and cyclist connections across the Granville Bridge. We’ve removed the north Granville loops to create a standard street grid layout,” the city explains.

“This work will transform the way we use the bridge by creating safer, more convenient access to active transportation and transit while enabling future improvements.” Listen to CityNews 1130 LIVE now!

Sewer work is also underway along Drake Street, potentially adding to delays, with the road shut down from Howe to Granville streets. However, that construction is expected to wrap up early this month.
