Your spring break weather forecast

With spring break officially kicking off for most students in B.C. this weekend, the weather seems to be cooperating.

CityNews Meteorologist Michael Kuss is forecasting above seasonal temperatures around Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley through the weekend.

People around the Lower Mainland can expect temperatures to start creeping up slightly Friday into Saturday.

“Just spring-time stuff, which is great, it’s a nice season and we’ll be enjoying it this weekend, for sure — this afternoon, 13°C, 14°C, potentially, around most of Metro Vancouver, as hot as 17°C away from the shore and into the western Valley,” Kuss said Friday. “Tomorrow, Sunday, Monday — that’s the pocket of heat. We’re looking at 19°C to 21°C across a good chunk of the area, mid-teens closer to the water.”

He says temperatures will cool slightly starting Tuesday, with a chance of showers mid-week.

Interior B.C.

For those lucky enough to be travelling to the Okanagan in the coming days, Kuss says you’re in luck.

“If you’re heading into the Interior for the weekend, it looks fantastic — and travel’s quite good, too, with melting conditions up even over the mountain passes. Temperatures into the mid-teens at least through the Okanagan, around the Thompson region. We should be in a range of 14°C, 15°C on the low side, to 17°C on the high-end. Even the overnight lows are going to be mild,” he said Friday.

“If you’re staying longer-term, all the way through the week, there’s a possibility of some snow rolling in for Wednesday and into Thursday, especially the farther north you go and at higher elevations for the ski hills.”

Seattle, Portland, PNW

If you have plans to head into the U.S., Kuss says it’ll be a bright weekend around the Pacific Northwest.

“If spring break has you driving south of the border over the weekend and into next week, it looks good, a lot like what we’re going to see across southern and most of B.C., at least through the weekend,” he said Friday.

“Temperatures above seasonal through Seattle down to Portland will be 16°C to 18°C. Away from the shore, you could see some 20°C daytime-high temperatures. We’re expecting to see highs start to taper toward the middle of next week, back toward seasonal with a risk of rain coming in by the tail-end of next week around Seattle and down into Portland, too.”

Island time

Meanwhile, Kuss says Vancouver Island is also in for sun, with the weather around Victoria expected to be quite favourable for the coming days.

“Victoria, the city of gardens, will live up to its name this weekend — lots of blooms and buds already. Absolutely stunning weather on the way, almost all sun. Still a little cool right down by the water — it’ll be 15°C, 16°C, but most of the locations even shortly away from the ocean, are going to be 17°C, 18°C, and that takes us all the way through Tuesday,” he explained.

“More cloud comes in through the middle of next week and some moderating temperatures, too, for the lower Island.”
