Over 20,000 customers lose power around Lower Mainland overnight due to storm
Windy conditions starting Saturday evening and running into Sunday caused more than 20,000 BC Hydro customers to lose power around the Lower Mainland and the Sunshine Coast.
Service was restored to almost all of them by Sunday morning, with only around 400 customers — mostly in Langley — remaining without power by 11 a.m.
Most of the outages were caused by trees falling across wires due to the windstorm.
Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Saturday for several areas, including the Lower Mainland and the Sunshine Coast, warning of heavy winds and thunderstorms.
“Strong winds may cause tree branches to break and localized power outages,” Saturday’s statement said.
Drivers are advised to use the four-way stop procedure at intersections where the lights are out.
