Penticton RCMP warn parents, students from ‘unsanctioned pre-graduation parties’

Police are warning parents and students about the dangers of going to “unsanctioned pre-graduation parties.”

In a release Tuesday, Penticton RCMP says gatherings like these are often informally organized, involve large numbers of students, and take place in unsupervised locations such as homes, parks, or remote areas.

Mounties say the lack of adult supervision and the potential for alcohol and drug use will significantly increase the risk of accidents, injuries, and other dangerous situations.

Const. Kelly Brett for the RCMP says they want to ensure students start the school year safely.

“These unsanctioned parties may seem like harmless fun, but they can quickly turn into dangerous situations. We urge parents to be aware of their children’s activities and to talk to them about the risks associated with attending such events,” she said.

The RCMP says it is working closely with the Okanagan Skaha School District and community organizations to watch for any of these gatherings.

Officers are increasing patrols in areas where these parties are likely to happen, and “will enforce laws related to underage drinking, illegal drug use, and noise disturbances.”

“Parents are encouraged to have open conversations with their children about making responsible choices and to set clear expectations about attending parties. Students should understand the legal and safety consequences of participating in these unsanctioned events,” Mounties said.
