New Westminster to open time capsule held in iconic giant tin soldier

The Lower Mainland is home to a 32-foot-tall giant with a secret.

The Guinness Book of World Records-holding largest tin soldier in New Westminster contains a time capsule that was placed inside when it was last moved in 2002 — and it’s due to reopen in February.

City council recently approved a plan to open the capsule on Valentine’s Day, 2025.

Council said the city will host an opening event, with a plan to invite individuals and associations who helped design and construct the tin soldier, and to work with local businesses to promote the event.

It says the capsule, which includes items from children in the community, was always intended to be opened on Feb. 14, 2025.

The solider was originally placed outside the Royal Westminster Regiment in 2000, before it was moved to the River Market Quay in 2002.
