Whitecaps wrap-up group stage undefeated

ORLANDO, FL (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps came alive in the second half as they beat Sporting Kansas City 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon to finish the group stage of the Disney Pro Soccer Classic with a 3-0 record.

Sebastian Le Toux, Russell Tiebert and Carlyle Mitchell tallied in the second half to pace the ‘Caps to the victory and the perfect record. Vancouver had already beaten the Montreal Impact 3-0 and the Houston Dynamo 1-0.

Vancouver had already clinched top spot in Group One and will play in Saturday’s final against either Toronto FC or FC Dallas. Those two teams play on Thursday as Group Two play finishes up.

The Whitecaps are sporting a revamped attack that has shown flashes of brilliance in the three exhibition matches, but the defence has also held strong by not allowing a goal.

“Getting clean sheets is also something you’re very pleased with as a coach, as that has a lot to do with professionalism and just doing the right things. It was nice to get that tonight,” says head coach Martin Rennie.

The ‘Caps will follow the final with a trip to Cary, North Carolina, to face Rennie’s former club, North American Soccer League side Carolina RailHawks on Sunday.

Vancouver’s Major League Soccer season opener is on March 10, when the Whitecaps host the expansion Montreal Impact.
