VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Not everyone wants to shell out the money for an air conditioner to keep cool during the summer.
It may not provide the same blast of cool air, but a ceiling fan is a good option for a lot of people.
Patrick Mathot from BC Hydro says the trick is to get it spinning the right direction for the time of day.
“During the day you want to have it going upwards, you want to draw the warm air up and out of your house, whereas if you’re directly under it when you’re sleeping or something, quite often you want to have it pushing down so that it’s puts a nice breeze on you,” he says
Mathot adds you can also cut down on the heat in the house by not cooking or baking during the day, and by drying your clothes in the sun instead of a clothes dryer.
“That’s going to do two things for you,” he explains. “Number one, it saves the energy bill from your dryer, the other thing is, your dryer is warm to the touch so you don’t want to put that heat into your house, if you can avoid it”
Another way to keep the house cool without an air conditioner is to close your blinds when the sun is up.
