Port Mann bridge toll lower than calculated $3?

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – The transportation minister has hinted the toll on the new Port Mann Bridge may be lower than $3.

That was the price calculated to pay off the bridge over a 40-year span, but the repayment period could be extended to cover the cost of the 10-lane bridge.

So why would Blair Lekstrom be making this suggestion, months before bridge is open?

“Embarrassment. Two-fold, I think. One is certainly based on other cities’ experiences. The other would be the diversion to the Pattullo Bridge would’ve been just chaos. I suspect they would want to avoid that,” says Gordon Price, the director of the City Program at SFU.

“If you are going to lengthen the amount of time in order to justify that lower toll, it means you are going to be paying more and while it might be a future generation that is going to be paying it, it is going to cost all of us.”
