ICBC audit necessary first step: Automotive Retailers Assn

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – An organization with close ties to ICBC calls the audit of the Crown corporation a ‘good first step.’ The report found serious corporate, structural, and management problems at the insurance company.

The Automotive Retailers Association represents most rental, repair, and auto recycling businesses in BC. President and CEO Ken McCormack says the relationship between ARA members and ICBC changed in 2008.

“We enjoyed a pretty good relationship with ICBC until recent years when they started unilaterally setting rates,” he says.

McCormack adds the lack of input from industry members has been very damaging. For example, he says car rental companies in BC have been forced to close 60 outlets across the province since ICBC’s new payment structure took effect.

“Our customers are the same as ICBC customers,” he says. “We’re not asking for rates that are unfair to motorists, we’re looking at fare rates.”

“All we’ve ever been looking for is to get ICBC back to the (bargaining) table.”

McCormack says in some cases retailers “haven’t had an increase in rates for as much as a decade,” but ICBC has been recording significant revenue growth.
