Gang violence knows no boundaries: expert

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Port Moody has recorded its third murder of the year as another man with reported gang ties was gunned down yesterday.

But it’s not just Port Moody that has seen recent gang-related violence. We’ve seen gang shootings in Richmond, Surrey, Langley, Burnaby and various neighbourhoods around Vancouver.

SFU Criminologist Rob Gordon says technology, like cell phones and the Internet, means organized crime in the Lower Mainland is very fluid.

“They don’t concentrate in particular geographical areas. There are open-air markets here and there, but a lot of the stuff is done by telephone delivery in the same way you’d order up a pizza,” notes Gordon.

“It’s an entirely different world now. A notion that a particular area of Metro Vancouver is a problem because there’s a concentration of these folks is really quite naive in a way.”

Gordon says what’s most worrying is that the murders happen when gangsters are most vulnerable — which is usually when they are out in public.
