PANAMA CITY, PANAMA (NEWS1130) – A capacity crowd of over 31,000 fans is expected tonight in Panama City to watch Canada and Panama meet in World Cup Soccer qualifying.
Canada is first in its group after Friday’s 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto. If Canada can gain at least four points in its final three games, the Canadians will advance to the final round of qualifying for the first time since 1998.
Fans in Panama City have done their best to throw the Canadians off their game.
For the past two nights there have been hundreds of followers camped outside the Canadian hotel, doing their best to disrupt the players’ sleep. Many blasted stereos and honked horns while some even set off fireworks.
“They gave us a hard time sleeping last night but it’s expected when they come to these hostile situations,” said Canadian forward Julian de Guzman.
Canadian head coach Stephen Hart joked that it’s normal for him as he has three kids at home.
The pre-game show begins at 5:30 p.m. on City tv. Game time is 6 p.m.
A Vancouver Whitecap was a hero for Scotland in one of today’s other World Cup qualifying matches. Whitecaps forward Kenny Miller scored in the 43rd minute in Scotland’s 1-1 draw with Macedonia.
