VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Whitecaps FC is hoping a return to BC Place will reverse a troubling five-game losing slide. The ‘Caps hold down the final playoff spot in the West. They start a four-game home stand Sunday.
It’s been 39 days since Vancouver has played at the False Creek pitch. The five-game slide started in Vancouver on August 15, as the Caps lost to Dallas 2-0. The next four losses have all been on the road, culminating with a 1-0 loss in Dallas last Saturday.
For the 3rd straight game, Head Coach Martin Rennie is going with back-up goalkeeper Brad Knighton, who will start ahead of veteran Joe Cannon. Knighton was excellent in Texas.
Also returning to the starting line-up is rookie striker Darren Mattocks. The 22-year-old leads the club with seven goals but has been coming off the bench. The Jamaican last started on August 18 in Seattle.
Defender Andy O’Brien is questionable for the match because of tendonitis in his knee. The Englishman took part in the majority of teams workout on Wednesday, but did not scrimmage.
The ‘Caps and Rapids have played twice this season, once in each others’ park. Vancouver won both matches 1-0.
