Giants fall to Georgia Strait rivals

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Despite a late third period surge by the Giants, Victoria took the first game of the season 6-4 in front of over 7,800 fans at the Coliseum. Cain Franson potted a pair of goals for Vancouver.

The Royals scored two goals in each period, as Delta native Steven Hodges had a couple of power play goals to give the visitors a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

Brandon Magee and Ben Walker each scored in the second period for Victoria and rookie Head Coach Dave Lowry. Franson scored the lone goal for Vancouver in the second.

After rookie Joe Hicketts scored on the first shot of the third period, the game looked to be in hand. New Giants 19-year-old goalie Liam Liston allowed 5 goals on the first 15 shots he faced. The Royals also scored an empty net goal.

Brett Kulak & Nathan Burns made the score respectable for Vancouver.

Russian Winger Alex Gogolev had three assists for the winners, while Jackson Houck had a pair of helpers for the G-men.

The two clubs will play again on Saturday in Victoria.
