BC man seeks class-action lawsuit against Google

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Do you send emails to someone with a Gmail account? A man from Sechelt wants to hear from you as he tries to launch a class action lawsuit against Google.

Wayne Plimmer filed the claim yesterday in BC Supreme Court in Vancouver; the Vancouver Sun reports he is seeking to have it certified as a class action.

The claim states Google is mining information from anyone who sends an email to one of its Gmail accounts and making a profit by letting third-party advertisers use it. That would mean Google is obtaining information from non-Gmail users, who have not agreed to Google’s terms of service and privacy policy.

Plimmer is seeking damages, including all of the profit Google would have made from the activity, plus another $500 per email.

Google has yet to respond to the claims, which have not been proven in court.

Two class-action lawsuits have been filed in California, making similar claims against both Google and Yahoo.
