DTES group wants justice for disabled woman

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A Downtown Eastside group says it wants justice for the disabled woman who was seen on video being pushed by a Vancouver Police Officer two years ago.

A rally at VPD headquarters this afternoon called for a criminal charge against  Cst. Taylor Robinson.

The officer was given a one-day suspension for the shove and BC’s Police Complaint Commissioner rejected that punishment after it was said to be too light.

Area advocate Ivan Drury says today they are marching to city hall to demand justice for Sandy, the woman who suffers from cerebral palsy.

“If anyone else pushed down a disabled woman anywhere in the street, and treated her with such disdain, they should be charged with a criminal act and not just with administrative penalties.”

A formal disciplinary hearing will take place this month and Vancouver Police are not expected to speak until then.

“We need justice and not violence and for police to support people on the downtown eastside and not to attack them.”
