Lions hit the road without five starting players

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) –  The BC Lions flew out today for Hamilton for Friday’s game against the Tiger-Cats as they attempt to secure first place, which would guarantee that the Lions host the CFL Western Final at BC Place.

“We have not discussed playoffs. Not once. I did not address the team post-game. I haven’t addressed the team all week about the playoffs,” says coach Mike Benevides, who adds that this week is all about playing Hamilton and playing better than they did last year in their visit to Southern Ontario.

The Lions suffered one of their worst losses of the 2011 season at Ivor Wynne Stadium, losing 42-10 on October 22nd.

The Lions beat the Tiger Cats 39-36 in Vancouver back in July. The team will be shorthanded once again with five starters sitting this week. Receivers Arland Bruce (concussion) and Geroy Simon (hamstring) along with defensive lineman Khalif Mitchell (quad strain), defensive tackle Eric Taylor (ankle) and offensive lineman Jon Hameister-Ries (herniated disc/knee) all stayed behind in Vancouver.

Today is also CFL trade deadline day.

General Manager Wally Buono tells News1130 Sports that he doesn’t have any deals in the works and he needs his team to get healthy and not make trades. Meanwhile, Lions running back Andrew Harris has been named CFL Canadian Player of the Week after rushing for 73 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s 27-22 win over Calgary.
