Online rumours in Amanda Todd’s death unfounded: RCMP

By

PORT COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – The RCMP are calling online allegations against a local man believed to be Amanda Todd’s tormentor as unfounded.

The Mounties are urging people to honour Todd’s memory by being “responsible citizen of the Internet” and thinking critically about information before spreading it.

A man was targeted online yesterday after some people claimed he played a part in driving Todd to commit suicide last Wednesday.  “The internet and social media were central to Amanda’s story and they are central to our investigation as well,” says RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen.

Another rumour that began last night involved the supposed release of Amanda Todd’s autopsy photos.  That was quickly debunked by the BC Coroner’s Service.

Mounties are also warning people about fake websites that have popped up, claiming to fundraise for the Todd family.  “One of our big challenges right now, is false information that is being spread by people who appear to be trying to use Amanda’s story to do harm or make a profit,” he adds.

“Taking advantage of a family’s grief is despicable. We want to get the word out that there is one real account and anyone who is interested can make a donation at any RBC branch to the Amanda Todd Trust Account,” says Thiessen.
