Cornish is the top Canuck ground gainer in the CFL

EDMONTON, AB (NEWS1130) – Jon Cornish of the Stampeders broke the single season CFL rushing yards record for a Canadian player. Cornish’s 22-yard carry in the third quarter, snapped Normie Kwong’s record from 1956.

Cornish came into the game against Eskimos needing 50 yards to set the new mark. After the record setting scamper in the third quarter, Cornish left the game. The St. Thomas More high school product finished the night with 69 yards and 1,457 for the season.

The 56-year-old mark set by Kwong was 1,437 yards.

Cornish leads the CFL in rushing by 214 yards over Kory Sheets of the Roughriders, who will be in action at BC Place on Saturday versus the Lions. If Sheets fails to have a huge night, Cornish will become the first Canuck to lead the league in rushing since former SFU product Orville Lee did so for Ottawa in his rookie season in 1988.

Calgary won the game 30-27.
