VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC’s 25,000 government workers have given lukewarm endorsement to a new contract reached with the province in September.
Sixty-four per cent of the members of the BC Government and Service Employees’ Union involved in the talks have voted in favour of the two-year pact. The agreement gives workers a four per cent wage increase and job security; it also cancels any plans by the government to private liquor distribution in the province.
The contract covers dozens of groups of workers from sheriffs and social workers to administrative and support services staff in government agencies around the province. BCGEU president Darryl Walker says the agreement will mean real improvements for members.
Finance Minister Mike de Jong says the agreement shows the government is making significant progress towards negotiated agreements, despite global fiscal challenges.
