Delta residents worry about coal rolling through community

DELTA (NEWS1130) – Some people in Delta are concerned about the prospect of trainloads of coal rolling through their community.
Fraser Surrey Docks has applied to Port Metro Vancouver to build a coal terminal that could handle up to eight-million tonnes of coal annually.
A decision on that application is expected early in the new year, and Delta Mayor Lois Jackson says council has received letters from people concerned about risks.
They’ve requested that the Port send someone to council to explain the plan.
“I think the thing we’re unaware of, is what impact, if any, would the coal dust have, and is there going to be coal dust? Are the trains going to be capped.”
Port Metro Vancouver says it hasn’t received the request yet, but says the city’s concerns, and those of neighbours near the tracks, will be considered before any decision is made.
