“Getting to Zero” is the message on this World Aids Day

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – “Getting to zero” — that is the theme of this year’s World AIDS Day looking ahead to a world free of the virus.
A local HIV centre is feeling hopeful for the first time in years.
The Dr. Peter Foundation is one of the leading HIV/AIDS organizations in the country.
Maxine Davis with the Foundation says they are hopeful for the first time in many years that a cure is within reach.
“Now, most people who are receiving treatment can expect a near normal life span. For me, World Aids Day is a moment to remember and and reflect.”
Davis says there is the feeling, but also one of frustration. “We can envision a time when there will rarely be new HIV transmissions. Certainly going forward, the Dr. Peter Aids Foundation vision is a time when we will not be needed.”
The centre currently helps 400 vulnerable people suffering from HIV/AIDS by providing therapy and a home.
