BC working on technology to catch ‘drug drivers’

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – This past week we heard how the annual CounterAttack roadchecks have saved hundreds of lives, now the province is looking at technology to catch people who are ‘drug driving’.
Chief Constable Jamie Graham says provincial services are teaming up to find the technology to catch people who are driving under the influence of drugs. “I can tell you the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles, and ICBC, and the Canadian and BC Chiefs of Police are working on drug impaired driving issues as we speak, and they are a high priority.”
Right now drug recognition experts — who are trained officers — are called out when someone’s been pulled over on suspicion of being impaired.
“They put you through a series of roadside sobriety tests, if their suspicions are confirmed, you’re taken to the office and put through a very very formal D.R.E process.”
Graham is now challenging the scientific community in BC to come up with the tools to help officers.
The goal is to save as many lives as the drinking and driving CounterAttack program does every year.
