High holiday demand keeping flight costs high

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Flying from one Canadian city to another is pricey, even more so in December.
Only having two national carriers makes it more difficult by holding the bargaining chips.
Brad Davies with Virtually There Travel says there aren’t many things that would change that. He says it’s unfortunate for consumers, Air Canada and West Jet are able to keep fares up because of high demand.
Davies says a third player in Canadian airspace would make things a bit easier for Canadians. “That third carrier would have to come from either the states or from Europe and that would shake things up a little bit. It’s always good, competition always leads to better fares, better service and more options.”
That wouldn’t happen anytime soon. Currently, the federal government restricts foreign airlines from flying from one Canadian city to another and hasn’t announced any plans to eliminate the rule.
