Langley City’s mayor disputing Stats Can crime stats

By

LANGLEY (NEWS1130) – It’s a crime stat that portrays Langley in a bad light; the city’s mayor disputes figures that show crime is worse in Langley than anywhere else in Metro Vancouver.

The Crime Severity Index was introduced in 2009 to measure not just the volume, but also the seriousness of crime. Regional stats from last year make Langley stand out in violent, non-violent, and overall categories.

But City of Langley Mayor Peter Fassbender calls the report flawed. “If we didn’t have any assaults or any violent crime in our community one year but the next year we had one incident, then the way they calculate that… that shows a dramatic increase.”

Fassbender says his stats show crime is actually on the decline. “[In the] last report we had, overall statistics show crime in our community has gone down except for one category, which is theft from auto.”

Statistics Canada says the Crime Severity Index provides a different way of looking at crime and should complement other measures.
