Vancouver School Board facing $24 million budget shortfall

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Expect colder classrooms, reduced library hours and a lack supplies to continue for students if the Vancouver School Board is unable to bring down a $24 million budget shortfall expected in the new year.
Other districts are also having the same problems. Chair Patty Bacchus admits she is concerned about the cash. “A few years ago, we faced a very large potential shortfall, but the government did come through with the some funding. We still had a large shortfall in the end of $16 to $17 million but at one point we were looking at a worst case scenario of $36 million dollars. It did improve… I hope that is the case this time.”
She figures the stats are similar around the Lower Mainland. “Some are in probably worse shape because they are struggling just to balance the budget for he current year… ours is balanced.”
